St. Mary’s GAA Club, Athenry extends its deepest sympathies to Mary, Sinead, Dara and the extended Coleman and Cooley families on the sad passing of Michael. We also extend our sympathies to Abbeyknockmoy Hurling Club members, former teammates, neighbours and his many friends.
Michael inspired and led a generation of his club’s players to win county titles at intermediate and senior level. Few in Athenry will ever forget, but always admired, his inspirational displays against us in the 1988 drawn and re-played senior finals.
He won All-Ireland Senior, Under 21 and three National Hurling League medals, captain in 1996, with Galway and was selected for three All-Star Awards.
