The Joyce Brothers: Martin and Mike Joyce lived in Carnaun in 1911. Their father was John Joyce and was aged 57 years in 1911. He was a Farmer. His wife Mary was aged 58. They were married on the 29/09/1883 so they would have been married 27 years in 1911. Mary’s maiden name was Shaughnessy. John and Mary had five children – Mary, Michael, Patrick, Martin and Honor according to the Athenry Church Records. In the 1901 and 1911 Census however only Mary, Michael and Martin are listed. Also in the 1911 Census it states that five children were born to the marriage but that only three were still living. Therefore the other two children namely Patrick who was born in 1888 and Honor who was born in 1892, must have died before 1901. Michael was the second eldest of the family and was born on 11/04/1886. Martin was the youngest of the three survived and was born in Aug – Sept 1889. In 1911 the neighbours of the Joyce family included Rabbits, Williams, Coens, Kileens, Cusacks, Gills, Faheys, Fordes, and Kennedys, as documented in the Census of that year.
