Mick Freeney was born on 28/10/1888. Myles Freeney was next and was born on 28/09/1890. According to the 1911 Census they were aged 20 and 18 respectively. Mick lived in the home place in Derrydonnell. The eldest of his siblings, Delia did not feature on the 1911 Census as she emigrated to Boston. Miles followed several years later. Paddy went to live in Castlelambert and Martin lived in High St. Galway. William was a superb athlete and hurler. He was known to shoot a rabbit while he would be riding a horse cantering across the field. William died young. According to Jackie – Mick’s son, his father was a good horseman and was a keen shot as was his brother Martin. Martin won the British Empire Clay Pigeon Shoot in Scotland more than once. We will focus on Mick Freeney only here, as he was the one that was on the winning team, though there is a section on the subs further on. Mick married Ellen Costello in Lackagh RC Church in April 1940. They had five children – Anthony, Jack, Mary, Midie and Anne better known as Nano. Anthony and Jack live in Athenry. Mick Freeney died the age of 82 on 20/01/1970. He is buried in Athenry.
