38 2012 was another successful sporting year at St. Brigid’s Loughrea. The school’s senior and junior hurlers retained their Connacht and All-Ireland titles while the junior side also claimed the Connacht Post Primary School’s title thus holding onto the championship also won a year previously. In Camogie, the Connacht Senior title was retained with the team reaching the AllIreland final where they lost to a stronger Loreto, Kilkenny outfit. Senior Hurling: The school’s senior hurling team defeated Athenry Vocational School, after a replay, to win the Connacht title. It took two injury time points from Brian Molloy to ensure a draw for St. Brigid’s in the drawn Connacht Final while Gerald Kelly scored a first half goal as the game finished all square at 1-18 to 3-12. In the replay a first half Jamie Ryan goal gave St. Brigid’s the lead. Jamie Ryan (1-3) picked up the man of the match in this game with Brian Molloy scoring 0-8 as Brigid’s recorded a three point victory. The All-Ireland semi-final pitted St. Brigid’s against Causeway Comprehensive School. St Brigid’s won this game by 2-13 to 2-10. Eanna Burke and Jarlath Mannion accounted for the St. Brigid’s goals while Brian Molloy, Darragh Dolan, Darragh Burke and Jamie Ryan also made scoring contributions to this victory. Unfortunately St. Brigid’s didn’t win the final on the field due to a dispute between St. Fergal’s Rathdowney and Nenagh V. S. in the second of the semi-finals. This dispute was never resolved and subsequently St. Brigid’s were awarded the title- a title the school would have preferred to have claimed on the field of play. Junior Hurling: The school’s junior hurling team enjoyed a very successful 2012. They defeated Athenry Vocational School in the Connacht Vocational School’s final with Brian Molloy scoring 2-7 of his side’s total. This victory propelled the side into an All-Ireland semifinal meeting against St. Fergal’s of Rathdowney with two late goals from David Mangan and Liam Kelly guaranteeing St. Brigid’s the victory. The final saw St. Brigid’s up against Causeway C. S. St. Brigid’s lead by 0-8 to 02 at half time before eventually winning out by 1-13 to 0-7. Jarlath Mannios was the St. Brigid’s goalscorer while Brian Molloy, Jamie Monaghan, Daniel Nevin, Johnny Conroy and Jacques Chahin all scored St. Brigid’s points as the school won its sixth All-Ireland Vocational school’s junior title. The team also retained the Connacht Post Primary school’s title. They defeated Gort C. S. , Presentation Athenry and Portumna C. S. in their group games before playing Gort C. S. in the final. St. Brigid’s won this game by 1-14 to 1-5. Jarlath Mannion received the man of the match award after scoring six points from play. David Mangan scored the team’s goal with Brian Molloy and Daniel Nevin other point scorers. Senior Camogie: St. Brigid’s senior camogie team were also successful in 2012. They defeated Presentation Athenry by 1-4 to 0-5 in the Connacht final. Rachel Monaghan scored the all important goal in this game. Rachel Monaghan also scored two points in this game with team captain Aoibhin Kenny and Patricia Manning scoring a point apiece. As a result of this victory the team were pitted against St. Flannan’s of Ennis in the All-Ireland quarter final a game they won comfortably. This set them up for an AllIreland semi-final tilt with Presentation Kilkenny. St. Brigid’s won this game by 2-11 to 2-1. Rachel Monaghan scored 1-8 in this win while the remainder was accounted by Patricia Manning, who scored a goal, Lorraine Farrell and Maria Cooney. St. Brigid’s came up against a strong Loreto Kilkenny side in the final with the experience of the Kilkenny side telling in the end as they won their third successive title. Rachel Monaghan scored 0-8 in this game with Patricia Manning (1-1) and Maria Cooney also getting scores. For St. Brigid’s centre back Lorraine Farrell impressed with Aisling Spellman, Laura Porter and Aoibhin Kenny also did well. ST.
