Athenry honour first Senior Hurling Title (Reeves Cup) Winners They won deservedly and were it not for a fine display by the Fohenagh goalie, Des Devine, they would certainly have been much further ahead at full-time. Both sides tried hard to overcome the difficult conditions. Against the wind in the first half goals by Ignatius Madden and Michael Treacy kept Athenry in touch and but they trailed by 3-5 to 2-0 at the break. Exploiting the wind advantage in the second half winners piled on the pressure and in the eighth minute Noel Keogh lashed home a goal. Another goal by Eamonn King near the end decided the issue in favour of Athenry with the final score Athenry 5-2 to Fohenagh's 3-5. Team: Gerry Burke, Billy Conway, Anthony Freaney, Frank Brody, T.J. Jordan (Capt.), Richie Williams, Tom Burke, Ray Glynn, Anthony Poniard, Noel Keogh, Michael Treacy, Hubert Conway, lgnatius Madden, Martin Rooney, Jack O’Shea. Sub: Eamonn King. Norman Farragher Chairman of the East Board presented the Reeves Cup to Athenry Captain T.J. Jordan after the game. To mark the 50th Anniversary of that success the players and officials involved were present or represented at function organised by St. Mary’s GAA Club in Gills Restuaraunt Athenry. Presentations were made on behalf of the club to each member by former Galway All-Ireland hurling medal winner in 1980/1987 and All-Star P. J. Molloy. |
