Late goals win Junior A Hurling Final
A game that saw entertaining patches and quite periods, late goals from Conor Caulfield and Micheal Mullins helped Athenry over the line, 2-9 to 0-8, in the County Junior A Hurling Final at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe.
Both sides struggled to settle into the contest and the opening quarter only produced two scores as Luke Madden was first to trouble the umpires with an Athenry point in the eighth minute.
Defences looked to be holding the key card but when Balygar's back unit started allowing spaces to their opponents in the second 15 minutes, Athenry punished them with seven white flags, including six from play to take an 0-8 to 0-3 advantage at the break.
In the second period Ballygar gradually reduced the deficit and got to within one point by the 58th minute having a goal disallowed for a ‘square ball’. Even though they were struggling to create opportunities, Athenry still had their noses in front. Then two minutes from time Conor Caulfield finished off a move for their opening goal to go 1-9 to 0-8 ahead. It was advantage Athenry and Ballygar's hopes of an elusive junior title were ended when Michael Mullins finished to the net another Athenry attack a minute into injury time before adding a point.
Corner backs Gary Moroney and Dean Healy didn't put a foot wrong, Emmet Caulfield and Michael Mullins laid by example in attack while Conor Caulfield had an impact upon his introduction.

Gort end hopes of a Junior Hurling double
Athenry's hopes of a Junior Hurling double fell short against Gort at Ballindereen in the Junior C Final. Two evenly matched sides served up a great hour’s hurling and it was only in the last few minutes that Gort managed to pull ahead.

Athenry had the most of the possession in the first half but wayward shooting meant they failed to convert this superiority on the scoreboard and only led by one point at the interval on a scoreline of Athenry 1-4 Gort 1-3. The goal courtesy of Stephen Flannery who got on the end of a flowing move to rattle the net.
The second half followed a similar trend and mid way through Athenry had established a four point lead, however Gort then hit a purple match and hit five unanswered points to lead entering the closing minutes, try as they might however Athenry couldn't bridge the gap.A disappointing year end for Kevin Quigley and his squad who put in a tremendous amount of work since last February and who played their part in this highly entertaining and sporting contest. Final Score Athenry 1-10 Gort 1-12.

Galway win nineth Minor Hurling title
Once again, the Galway minor hurlers gave a master class, as Mattie Murphy's charges delivered the county’s ninth All-Ireland Minor hurling title defeating Dublin by 1-21 to 1-12. Order restored, the doubters and those who whispered their misgivings and reservations prior to this decider were silenced.
To say, Galway won this title at their ease would not be an understatement. After negotiating a potentially tricky opening quarter, the young Tribesmen took charge of this fixture and were simply inspiring.
The Galway team included Athenry’s towering Jack Carr who played his part getting on the score board to help put the game beyond Dublin’s reach.

Galway have easy win in Under 21 Football Final
Playing traditional Galway football the county’s Under 21 football team played with commitment, passion and teamwork to power their way to a comprehensive win over Cavan in  the All-Ireland Under 21 Final.
On a magnificent occasion in Croke Park, helped in no small part by the invasion of Cavan supporters, who could be forgiven for dreaming of glory but were no match for the Connacht Champions who were 2-16 to 1-9 winners.
A key element of the Galway success was the midfield dominance of Athenry’s Tomas Flynn and Fionntán O Curraoin. In the All-Ireland semi final against Cork, Thomas was man-of-the-match, out playing a number of opponents to overcome the favourites. In the final O Curraoin also gave a similar spectacular exhibition of high fielding - between them, they laid the foundation for Galway’s success.

Double for Galway as Under 21 Hurling Team add Title
Galway Under 21 Hurling team delivered a delightful double by winning the county’s tenth All-Ireland Under 21 crown with a comprehensive 3-14 to 1-10 victory over an out-classed Dublin side.
A group of players, managed by Anthony Cunningham, who have been no strangers to heartbreak and frustration in underage hurling finals really came of age at Thurles six days after the minors enjoyed an equally comfortable victory over the same opponents at Croke Park.
Galway supporters may have been disillusioned by so much underage promise failing to materialise into senior success, but this was a performance to treasure in its own right for the maroon contingent in the 5,352 crowd.
