Eleventh County Under 21 Hurling Title for Athenry
2007 210It was hard not to feel sympathy for the players from both teams in the Under-21 A Hurling County Final at Ballinderreen, given they had to contend with a huge wind blowing straight down the pitch. It was Athenry though with an accomplished performance who went on to capture the Club's ninth crown in the grade. Liam Mellows to their credit battled bravely to the end but a total of 13 wides, eight of which came in the opening period with the wind at their backs, unhinged their attempt for glory.
Athenry were happy that the supply lines were still producing decent prospects, John Grealish played well in the goals while in front of him was a back unit that defended stoutly from start to finish. Keith Jordan and Anslem McGowan were prominent, while captain Kieran O'Donovan led the charge all day.
Midfielders Emmett McGowan and Niall Gibbons got through a power of work, up front Cathal Fahy, Sean Glynn, who really came into his own in the second half, and the Healy brothers, Kieran and Adrian, worked hard all day.
Athenry's overall match sharpness - thanks in no small way to their replayed semi-final victory over Mullagh which had to go to extra time - helping their case
Final score: Athenry 2-8 Liam Mellows 0-9

Galway win All-Ireland Under 21 Hurling Title

Galway maintained their 100% record against Dublin in All-Ireland Under-21 hurling finals with an impressive 5-11 to 0-12 win over the Metropolitans at Croke Park. The Tribesmen made a blistering start to the game and led by 3-4 to 0-2 after just 13 minutes thanks to well worked goals from Conor Kavanagh and Athenry’s Sean Glynn.
It was suspect defending on Dublin's part in those opening minutes as Vincent Mullins' prolific forwards rampaged through with considerable ease. Indeed such was Galway's early dominance that Dublin's only point in the opening quarter came after four minutes from top scorer Alan McCrabbe from a placed ball.
Dublin's defence got stronger as the half progressed and Paddy Curtin made an impressive save in the 15th-minute denying Sean Glynn what would have been his second goal.
Dublin were not going to lie down and Sean Lane's charges came out strongly for the second half with two McCrabbe points, but once again Galway found their groove and the Craobh Chiarain clubman was the only Dublin player to hit the target in the second half with Ciaran O’Donovan part of a solid full back line.
