Under14-Feile na nGael Hurling

Athenry Under14 hurlers finished strong in their last Feile game on Saturday against Clarinbridge with a stand out performance from Kelvin Langan who scored 3-3. Athenry were first to score and exchanges were tight for the rest of the half with the Bridge going in 1 point ahead on a scoreline Athenry 1-4 Clarinbridge 1-5. The Athenry lads delivered a strong workmanlike performance in the second and got their goals at crucial times to win by 4-05 to 1-10.
Scorers:Kelvin Langan 3-03, Ronan Jennings 0-1, Eanna Brady 1-0,Matthew Feeney 0-1.
Athenry finished second in their Feile group having earlier lost to Turlouhmore and defeated Micheal Cusacks.

In their first match of the U14A Championship Athenry U14 hurlers had a great win over Loughrea . The match was played in St. Brendan's Park in Loughrea in good conditions.
Athenry started well with a goal after 5 minutes from Ryan O Donnell. Loughrea replied with a point before Athenry scored a second goal to put some daylight between the teams. With two further goals from Kelvin Langan and Gabriel McCann and a point from Ryan O Donnell Athenry lead at half time by 4-01 to 0-4.
The second half was a tougher battle but Athenry prevailed and out scored Loughrea by four points to one.
The defence played very well on the day and goalie Eoin Hickey kept a clean sheet.
Final score: Athenry 4-5 Loughrea 0-5 Scores: Ryan O Donnell 2-02 Kelvin Langan 1-0 Gabriel McCann 1-0 Eanna Brady 0-2 Ronan Jennings 0-1

Under 16A Hurling

Athenry took on Gort in the 1st round of the 2017 C'ship in Gort on Monday evening. Athenry started well and led by double scores 0-8 to 0-4 at half time. Athenry continued their dominance in the second half with solid performances by Shane Quirke and Eoin Lawless in defence. At the finish Athenry won comfortably by 0-15 to 0-6.
Scores:Paddy Rabbitte 0-3,Jamie Treacy 0-1,Donal Parr 0-3,Alan Cahill 0-1,Alan Haverty 0-2,Jack Dowling 0-1, Mark Hardiman 0-1,Brandon Lee 0-2

Minor Football

Played in Ballygar, a huge display by our minor footballers last evening, even though down by 1-1 to 0-0 after 10 mins Athenry fought back well to draw level at ht on a scoreline of 1-2 apiece. The 2nd half was a close fought affair, Athenry took the lead and did'nt relinquish it until the last kick of the game.
Scorers:Adam Kellegher(1-1) Darren Collins (0-3),Ronan Bergin(0-2) Elliot Langan(0-1) Final score: Athenry 1-7 Ballygar 1-7

Senior Hurling

It was great for supporters and players alike to be greeted by the sunshine for this encounter following on from the conditions of the previous weekend. Played in Raheen on a very good surface this game displayed all that was good about the game of hurling. The highlight of the first half was the long range point scoring ability of the Sarsfields team allied to some heroic defending by Athenry.
Aided by the breeze in the second half Athenry turned the tables and goals from Cathal Keane and Conor Caulfield were decisive. Sarsfields, minus county star Joe Cooney, were a good test for our improving outfit and again the impact of players from the bench aided our cause. Games like these will certainly serve to sharpen and improve our hurling. Late points from Ronan Hardiman and Cian Burke saw Athenry win by 5 points.

All-Ireland glory for Galway Minor and Senior Hurling Teams

Some days you don't forget. Sunday September 3rd 2017 is one that will be forever etched into the memory mass of Galway GAA supporters, whether they were in Croke Park, Eyre Square, at home or in one of the far corners of the globe.

For a generation of Galway people, this was the first time they had witnessed a Galway team winning a Liam MacCarthy Cup. So many moments to savour, it feels a shame to only name a couple, but needs must. The shuddering roar at the final whistle and watching David Burke lift the cup aloft after 29 long years probably trumps the lot, but listening to 'N17' and 'Galway Girl' blare out over the PA system in the GAA's prime cathedral brought a carnival atmosphere to the whole occasion. People from different parts of the county danced and hugged one another in sheer delight. Sport has a very tangible ability to unite people if only for a brief period of time.
To the victor go the spoils, and on All-Ireland Hurling Final day those spoils come in the considerable form of the golden chalice that is the Liam MacCarthy Cup. There wasn't one Galway supporter not feeling empathy for their Waterford counterparts though.

More than 50,000 supporters turned out across Galway to greet the All-Ireland Minor and Senior Hurling Champions as they returned home, having won the senior and minor titles for the first time in the same year. First stop was Ballinasloe and then as thousands more supporters gathered on the flyovers on the M6 as the buses bringing the teams continued the 60km journey to Galway City where a crowd of over 20,000 waited for them at Pearse Stadium in Salthill.

Reeves Cup winning team's 50th Anniversary

In the 1967 gale-swept Reeves Cup hurling final, Athenry shocked favourites Fohenagh to win the club's first major title at senior level. Winning a competition, for teams knocked out of the championship in the first round, was a timely boost for the newly formed club in it’s second year. Athenry had wins over Moycullen and Gort in the closing stages to qualify for the final, which was played at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe. They won deservedly and were it not for a fine display by the Fohenagh goalie, Des Devine, Athenry would have been much further ahead at full time.
Both sides tried bard to overcome tbe difficult conditions. Against the wind in the first half, goals by Ignatius Madden and Michael Treacy kept Athenry in touch but they trailed by 3-5 to 2-0 at the break. Exploiting the wind advantage in the second half, the winners piled on the pressure and Noel Keogh fired home a goal. Another goal by Eamonn King near the end decided the issue in favour of Athenry with the final score, Athenry 5-2 to Fohenagh's 3-5.
The Athenry team was: Gerry Burke; Billy Conway, Anthony Freaney, Frank Brody; T.J. Jordan (capt.), Richie Williams, Tom Burke; Ray Glynn, Anthony Poniard; Noel Keogh, Michael Treacy, Huben Conway; Ignatius Madden, Manin Rooney, Jack O'Shea. Sub: E.amonn King.
Norman Farragher Chairman of the East Board pre-sented the Reeves cup to the captain T.J. Jordan after the game.
To mark the 50th Anniversary of that success the players and officials involved were present or represented at function organised by the Club. Presentations were made on behalf of the Club to each member by former Galway All-Ireland hurling medal winner in 1980/1987 and All-Star P.J. Molloy.

Senior Hurling League Round 5 v Sarsfields

It was great for supporters and players alike to be greeted by the sunshine for this encounter following on from the conditions of the previous weekend. Played in Raheen on a very good surface this game displayed all that was good about the game of hurling. The highlight of the first half was th eliong range point scoring ability of the Sarsfields team allied to some heroic defending by Athenry.

Aided by the breeze in the second half Athenry turned the table and goals from Cathal Keane and Conor Caulfield were decisive. Sarsfields, minus county star Joe Cooney, were a good test for our improving outfit and again the impact of players from the bench aided our cause. Games like these will certainly serve to sharpen and improve our hurling. Late points from Ronan Hardiman and Cian Burke saw Athenry win by points.

Senior Hurling League Round 4 v Turloughmore

Similar to conditions in the game v Pearses this was an encounter that will have done little to improve the hurling ability of either side. It was very evenly contested throughout and when Turloughmore looked to be pulling away in the 2nd half, Cathal Keane dispatched a goal to put the minimum between the teams. The closing stages were tightly contested and Athenry were fortunate to draw level with the game nearly over. A draw was probably a fair result for both sides.
Supporters who turned out for Rounds 3 and 4 played over Paddy’s weekend must be commended and both players and management appreciate the continued support of all.

Senior Hurling League Round 3 v Padraig Pearses

Played in conditions that were most unsuited to hurling this proved to be a game for the purists. The wind and rain spoiled what would have been a good encounter between the two sides. With Pearses leading at half time on a scoreline on 9 points to 3, Athenry had it all to do in the second half. With both teams scoring 2 points each in the 3rd quarter, Athenry looked to be running out of time but a strong last quarter saw them outscoring their opponents on a scoreline of 7 points to 1 to win by the bare minimum.

Minor Hurling

Athenry Minor hurlers opened this year's Championship campaign with a well deserved win over a much vaunted Clarinbridge side on Easter Monday. Athenry dominated proceedings in the first half led magnificently from the back by Jack McCullagh, Donal Parr and Conor Tully. Cillian Lawless was unerring from the placed ball ably assisted by Martin Cullen and Liam Egan in the forwards, Athenry went in 5 points to the good at the interval. The Bridge fought back in the second half but again a great defensive effort from Athenry and a magnificent diving save from Paddy Rabbitte in the goals saw the Maroon and Whites win out on a scoreline of

Athenry 0-15 Clarinbridge 0-12

Under 14 Hurling

Athenry U14 hurlers had a great win over Loughrea in their first match of the U14A Championship. The match was played in St. Brendan's Park in Loughrea on Saturday last 11th March in good conditions.
Final score: Athenry 4-5 Loughrea 0-5 - Scores: Ryan O Donnell 2-2 Kelvin Langan 1-0 Gabriel McCann 1-0 Eanna Brady 0-2 Ronan Jennings 0-1

Senior Hurling League

St. Thomas' 0-19 Athenry 0-16
Played in perfect conditions on the new playing surface in Castledaly, this was an ideal game in terms of preparation and intensity ahead of championship. St Thomas proved to be slicker in terms of their striking and ability to take scores throughout. Having gone in 4 points behind at half time we closed the gap to 3 at stages and matched our opponents in the second half but failed to get the all important goal. Again, the squad was utilised and at this stage, performance and getting game time into players is the main issue at stake. Scorers: Cathal Keane 0:9, Niall Gibbons 0:2, Mark Hannon 0:2, Mickey Mullins 0:1, Cian Burke 0:1
