Club win ninth County Under 21 Hurling Title

It was hard not to feel sympathy for the players from both sides in the Under-21 A H County Final at Ballinderreen, given they had to contend with a huge wind blowing straight down the pitch along. It was Athenry though with an accomplished performance who captured the club's ninth crown in the grade and while Mellows battled bravely to the end, a total of 13 wides, eight of which came in the opening period with the wind at their backs, unhinged their attempt for glory.
Athenry were happy that the supply lines were still producing decent prospects, John Grealish played well in the goals while in front of him was a back unit that defended stoutly from start to finish. Keith Jordan and Anslem McGowan were prominent, while captain Kieran O'Donovan led the charge all day.
Midfielders Emmett McGowan and Niall Gibbons got through a power of work, up front Cathal Fahy, Sean Glynn, who really came into his own in the second half, and the Healy brothers, Kieran and Adrian, worked hard all day.
Athenry's overall match sharpness - thanks in no small way to their replayed semi-final victory over Mullagh which had to go to extra time - helping their case
Final score: Athenry 2-8 Liam Mellows 0-9
