In the run up to the County Senior Hurling Cchampionship our players & officials met Pat Joyce. The Club would like to thank Pat for his ongoing generous sponsorship of our club. We are extremely grateful for the support that Joyce's Supermarkets have given to our juvenile teams for the past eleven years through the 'Sean McGovern School of Hurling. Since 2017 we are delighted to have Joyce's Supermarkets as the main sponsor of our adult teams. Our Senior hurling team will play Padraig Pearses on Sunday next at 4 p.m. in Kenny Park.

Club Adult and Juvenile AGMs  2017

At a very well attended Annual General Meeting held in the Raheen Woods Hotel on Wed 13/12/17,comprehensive reports were delivered by Chairman Sean Keane, Secretary Caroline McLoughlin and Treasurer David Donohue.

Secretary Caroline reflected on an eventful year both on and off the field with the highlights being the Minor Hurlers reaching the County Final where they went down fighting to a strong Castlegar side, the Minor Footballers reached the North Board Final where they pushed eventual County Champions Oran-Maree right to the end, our Intermediate Footballers retained their Intermediate status and reached the final of the Cahill Cup.Our Senior Hurlers performed very well in the league and qualified for a play off position in the County Cup..Caroline thanked all the managers and players of all teams, all volunteers,delegates,medical staff, referees and committee members for their support throughout the year,Caroline then presented plans for an EGM in the early New Year during which key areas associated with Coaching,Membership,Social Facilities,Development,Finance and Club Plan will be explored and action plans developed to safeguard the future of our club. All members are encouraged to attend and get involved.
A detailed Financial report was presented by David Donuhue. David thanked all our sponsors of both Juvenile and Adult teams and all who supported the Development Draw,Weekly Lotto and the Golf AM AM during the year.

Chairman Sean Keane thanked all who attended and paid tribute to all members who assisted during the year, with special mention for Kathleen Bane ,Bobby Gardner and Brendan Burke. The Chairman outlined the success of a number of off field initiatives undertaken by the club this year namely Scor Quiz Team, Athenry Enterprise Day,Health and Wellbeing evening,CPR training,PopUp Shop,1960's Commerative Event,Safetalk Suicide Training and thanked all involved. Sean congratulated the Juvenile Club on another hugely successful year with County Cups being won by our U-16 Hurlers and U-13 Footballers. Congratulations were extended to the Camogie Club and best wishes for the upcoming All Ireland Semi Final, The Chairman extended deepest sympathies to all club members both past and present who were bereaved during the year.Finally In conclusion Sean wished all a Happy and Healthy Christmas and New Year.

Chairman Robert Ruane opened the meeting. The minutes from 2016 and the 2017 Secretary’s report were taken as read.

Treasurer Jackie Haverty presented the 2017 Treasurer’s report.

Juvenile Chairman Robert Ruane addressed the meeting and said it was encouraging to see so many at the AGM.

He thanked the managers and coaches in pursuit to make Athenry a great club. He also thanked the parents for all the driving of lads to training and matches throughout the year. He mentioned that we had a new online registration this year, which went well and brought up our numbers. He said that many of our juvenile teams did very well but unfortunately Athenry did not have anyone on this year’s Galway Minor Hurling panel.

He commended Shea Hennessy and Ruairí Collins for representing Athenry at U15 County Football and Oisin Fox, Patrick Rabbitte for representing Athenry at U16 County Football. He also commended Shane Quirke, Patrick Rabbitte, Donal Parr and Brandon Lee for representing Athenry at U16 County Hurling; Eoin Lawless, Mark Hardiman, Jamie Treacy and Jack Dowling for representing Athenry at U15 County Hurling and Eanna Brady, Ben Haverty, Darragh Morrissey and Ryan O’ Donnell for representing Athenry at U14 County Hurling. He thanked Eddie Brady for representing Athenry as a selector at County U14 Hurling and thanked Peter Kelly for another year as a Coiste Iomana na nÓg member. He also thanked Peter Kelly for his role as Juvenile Hurling Club delegate and Brendan Burke for his role as Juvenile Football Club delegate. He welcomed Joyces as the new club sponsor and thanked other small businesses in Athenry for their support of the club with the lotto every week. He congratulated the Community Games Hurling team who won the Galway Community Games and did well in the National Finals. He also congratulated the U11 Hurling team who won the Phelan Stone Hurling tournament in Ballyragget managed by Gerry Treacy. He also thanked Gerry Treacy for taking over the U13C team this year at short notice and for his dedication to the club in repairing hurleys.

He congratulated Andrew Lawless and the U16 Hurling team who won the County A Championship and the U15 Hurling team who were runners up in the County A Championship Final. He also congratulated Brendan Burke and the U13 Football team who won the Division 2A Championship and said that Brendan Burke was always there to help the club out. He thanked Juvenile Secretary John Cloonan and Senior Club Secretary Caroline McLoughlin for their work for the club. He thanked Jackie Haverty for her good work as Juvenile Club Treasurer. He also thanked Senior Club Treasurer David Donohue and club chairman Sean Keane. Club Chairman Sean Keane then addressed the meeting and said the club was getting stronger despite difficult times at the moment. He said it was good to see so many involved and acknowledged it takes time and it is more difficult going forward. He said that our facilities need to be upgraded. We need to plan for the future with a big influx of new members and interest with Galway winning the All Ireland. There needs to be more investment made at Club facilities in Carnaun. He thanked Robert, Jackie and John for their work in the juvenile club. He wished everyone a Happy Christmas and reminded everyone of the Senior Club AGM on December 13th at 8pm in Raheen Woods Hotel.

AOB: Tom Carr addressed the meeting and encouraged people to attend the Senior Club AGM on Dec 13th where a broader view of the club outside of coaching would be presented. He encouraged people to get involved with the club and said we need to move the club forward.

A misconception with regard to the U16 County Football semifinal fixture was discussed and clarified. 

A number of positive suggestions relating to underage training, club facilities and club gear were discussed.

Healthy Club Officer encouraged members to adhere to club policies and procedures moving forward.

Chairman Robert Ruane closed the meeting by thanking all for their attendance, wished all a happy Christmas and encouraged all to attend the Senior Club AGM on Wednesday Dec 13th at 8pm in Raheen Woods.


Congratulations to Presentation College Athenry team and assistant manage Eddie Brady on their victory in the Connacht PPS A Hurling Final. The Final scoreline Presentation Athenry 2-19 Gort Community School 1-8.
