91 This was a long but successful year for the Tommy Larkins minor panel and their mentors. Training commenced in early February for group games and ended in mid November with the ultimate honour of Minor County Champions. In all we played eleven games scoring 31 goals and 125 points and conceding 14 goals and 125 points. In the group we bet Ardrahan, Kilconeiron, Clarinbridge, Loughrea, and Cappatagle and lost narrowly to Leitrim Killnadeema. In the quarter final we faced Gort in Athenry –this ended in a draw. The replay was in Loughrea and we had 10 points to spare at the finish. This set up a semi final with Athenry in Ballinasloe. After a close first half we raised our game in the second half and won 1-16 to 0-11. Next we headed to Loughrea for the county Final against north Galway side Turloughmore. After a poor start we lost our full back Christopher Moloney with a broken leg after twenty minutes but still managed to recover before half time to be level 0-6 points each. Turloughmore came into the second half with all guns blazing and sent over some great points but goals from Jason Flynn and Luke page kept us in the game which ended Turloughmore 0-17 to Tommy Larkins 2-11. The replay was fixed for Athenry on Sunday November 11th. This was another great game we started well but lost our composure midway through the half leaving Turloughmore 2-6 to 1-4in front at half time. Turloughmore defended very well in the third quarter after which Turloughmore led 2-10 to 1-5. It looked all over but a fantastic last quarter from Larkins saw them outscore Turloughmore 3-3 to 0-3. A great goal from Jason Flynn started the comeback and two more from substitute Luke Page put Larkins in front –but Turloughmore levelled. A sixty five from Jason Flynn sent the Larkins supporters wild. Turloughmore had one last chance to save the day but it went wide and Larkins held on to win 48 to 2-13. This was a great year for this Minor team with some great team performances. They showed huge commitment in winning this title having lost team caption Conor Nevin earlier in the year with a serious knee injury. His return for the replay had a huge influence on the outcome. Despite losing players through emigration the future looks bright for the club. Ní neart le cur le chéile 40th Anniversary Celebration Night The historical success of Tommy Larkins Senior hurling team of 1971 Galway and Connacht championship was celebrated in the newly constructed Clubhouse in January. It was a fitting tribute to a group of players and officers who achieved this extraordinary feat a mere three years after the clubs formation in 1968. Great credit is due to these former players and their partners who travelled great distances to make this occasion such a wonderful success. After commemorative mass celebrated by local parish priests Fr O’Rourke and Fr Conroy and team member Fr Cathal Stanley the ladies committee provided a superb meal for all. Each member was presented with a framed photograph of the team panel and selectors. A great night of reminiscing followed.
