26 COISTE IOMANA NA nÓG NA GAILLIMHE Is an onóir mór dom mo thuairisc a chur ós bhur gcomhair don bhliain 2012. Bhí bliain gnóthach againn agus tá na comortaisí uilig chríochnaithe don bhliain. Toddie Byrne Cup: Féile na nGael Each year all Galway clubs enter the annual Féile Competition to determine Galway’s representatives at national finals which were held this year in Dublin. Clarinbridge earned the honour of representing Galway after overcoming Kilnadeema Leitrim in the final played in Kenny Park Athenry. The Clarinbridge team brought great honour to the county by reaching the final which was played in Croke Park. It proved heart breaking in the end when a stronger more physical St Brigids team from Dublin finally overcame Clarinbridge after extra time. Evan Niland received the man of the match accolade in the Galway Final. Oranmore Maree defeated Athenry in a keenly contested Toddie Byrne Shield final. Hat trick hero Diarmuid Byrne received the man of the match trophy for the Blues. Under-14 Championship: The Ocean Hygiene Supplies & Packaging Under 14 Championships ran very smoothly this year. Once again Clarinbridge and Kilnadeema Leitrim locked horns in the U 14 A Hurling Final. This is testament to the trojan work being carried out in both these clubs. Once again it was the boys from the Bridge that prevailed in the final. In the B U14 final Tynagh Abbey Duniry defeated a great Sarsfields team by one point in what for many was the best game played at this grade for many years. Bearna Forbacha overcame a very skilful Michael Cusacks team in the U 14 C final played in Carnmore and Turloughmore B received the clubs first silverware of 2012 by beating a gallant Clarinbridge B squad. Under-13 Championship: The A final was contested between Clarenbridge and Turloughmore with Clarenbridge coming out on top. In the B final the vibrant Killimor club beat the up and coming force of Mountbellew Moylough. In the C final, a wonderful all round team display from Abbeyknockmoy overcame the gallant Cois Fharraige combination of Bearna Forbacha and An Spideal. Under- 16 Championship: 2010 U14 Féile All Ireland champions Turloughmore defeated the beaten all Ireland semi finalists of that year Gort in this years Ocean Hygiene U16 A Hurling final. It was without doubt the best underage hurling final played in Galway for many a year. “Turlough” shaded it by a score of 0-16 to 015. It is small comfort to Gort but is a sign of a tremendous effort on their part to run the Black ‘n Whites so close. Earlier on the day Annaghdown defeated a well drilled Sylane team in the U14 D final. The scene was then set for the U16 B and U 16 C finals which were held in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe. Cappataggle had to finish strongly to see off a great spirited Padraig Pearses team in the U 16B final. Mountbellew Moylough had to dig deep to see off a tremendous second half display from local rivals Abbeyknockmoy . Congratulations to Mountbellew Moylough so soon after last years success at U13B . The future looks good for North Galways Black andAmber. Ocean Hygiene U 12 Hurling There are currently 44 hurling Clubs in Galway. There are 3 different cycles in all Clubs 1. Academy. Non competitive small sided Games. Age 6 to 12 2. Juvenile. Competitive games / Development Squads Age 12 to 17 3. Adult. Minor, U21, Senior Club and County Age 18+ The 6 to 12 age embraces the child centred approach to games development. It advocates maximum participation optimizing the skills of Hurling and the playing standard. As you may be aware, under The Governing Body Rules of The GAA we can not have an U12 County Final at any level. This year, Coiste Iomanana nOg felt the need to mark the passage of our young players from the Academy stage to the competition stage for 2013. The Galway Adult Hurling Board acknowledged the wonderful work being done in the clubs. Each club which participated received €100 Supermac vouchers The hurling board fully recognizes the efforts being done for the development of all the clubs young hurlers across Galway. This was also fully evident with its generous support of the Galway Hurling Academy teams in 2012. On morning of Sunday The 7th of October, all clubs played a final game. In this pilot scheme , the first of its kind ever taken in the country, proved a resounding success. Congratulations, to all involved. Hurling Development Coiste Iomana na n-Óg worked very closely with The Galway Hurling development squads in 2012. Sylvie Donoghue and Eamonn Kelly were liason officers with the U15 development squad under the stewardship of Michael O Rourke and Michael Helebert who won the inaugural Limerick tournament held in Rathkeale. The U 16 squad were defeated in the Tipperary Supporters club Tournament. This well prepared team managed by Gerry Spelman, lost out to Limerick in the Final. The Galway Under 14 squad reached the semifinal stage of the Tony Forrestial Tournament held in Waterford. Thanks to manager Bosco Gallagher and his background team for all their hard work and especially Johnny Wynne and Tom Lambert for organising all the logistics for the weekend in Waterford. A monumental task indeed. Also a big well done to the Galway Under 14 D development squad who won the Connolly Cunniffe tournament this year. Referees: On behalf of Coiste Iomana na n-Og, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the referees who adjudicated at all our juvenile hurling fixtures in 2012. I would like to congratulate all the referees for the cooperation and hard work in providing your services in officiating at all our fixtures. What has become apparent to me over the course of the year, is the very high standard of refereeing that we have in Galway. It is also pleasing to see some new referees plying the trade in 2012. Well done to Michael Nee and the referee committee on providing training for the next generation of referees. Sponsorship: We are pleased and grateful that Tom Monaghan Director of Ocean Hygiene Supplies & Packaging continued with his sponsorship of Juvenile Hurling in Galway for the sixth year. We are indebted to him for his generous Sponsorship of our Underage Championships and the promotion of Hurling in Galway and we ask clubs to please support Ocean Hygiene Supplies & Packaging when purchasing for their clubs. Also congratulations are in order to Tom Monaghan with Killimordaly recently regaining Senior Hurling Club status with Tom at the helm. The Players: Finally, I would like to thank every young hurler in Galway who participated in all our games in 2012. From the children who participated in the “Go Games” at 8 and 10 to the players who represented Galway in our county hurling Development squads. The greater the sense of achievement, fun and fair play our young people experience playing Hurling the more we will see them enjoy their involvement and strive to develop their true potential.
