TURLOUGHMORE 50 YEARS AGO ATHENRY CELEBRATE 25 YEARS 50 years ago 1962: Turloughmore 7-10 Castlegar 0-9 This Galway Senior Hurling Final replay, instead of being a classic like the drawn game, was a fiasco. Turloughmore won the second title of their famous “six-in-a-row” in beating a slow and sluggish Castlegar team that bore no resemblance to the team that drew 2-9 apiece with the same opposition three weeks previously. That drawn game produced a standard of hurling that was so high that one could hardly credit that the game was played on a slippery sod in pelting rain, lashed by a high wind. It was a blistering battle in spite of these drawbacks from the moment the ball was thrown in by Most Rev. Dr. Patrick Winters, the Killimor born Bishop of Tanganyika. 6,000 people, a record for a County Final, went away sadly disappointed from this game, played in Pearse Stadium. Spectators started filing away long before the final whistle. The surprising fact about the game was that the first half was quite even with Turlough leading by just 2 at half time. Turlough however, moved into top gear in the second half, slamming in goal after goal. Castlegar did not score at all. It is hard to credit Castlegar’s complete eclipse in the second half of this game. Turloughmore outplayed them in every sector of the field. Left half forward, Mickey Cullinane, was undoubtedly the star of the game. He gave a superb display, scoring 2-5 (1-4f). PJ Qualter, at full forward was another star, scoring 3 goals.
